10 Ways to Improve Your Indoor Air Quality

The air inside your home can be 2-5 times more polluted than outdoor air. Poor indoor air quality can trigger allergies, asthma, and other health issues. Here are ten effective ways to improve the air you breathe at home.

1. Change Air Filters Regularly

Your HVAC filter is your first line of defense against airborne particles. Replace it every 1-3 months, and consider upgrading to a HEPA or MERV 13+ filter for better filtration.

2. Control Humidity Levels

Keep indoor humidity between 30-50%. Too much humidity promotes mold and dust mites; too little can irritate respiratory systems. Use dehumidifiers or humidifiers as needed.

3. Ventilate Your Home

Open windows when weather permits, use exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms, and consider an energy recovery ventilator (ERV) for continuous fresh air exchange.

4. Keep Your Home Clean

Regular vacuuming with a HEPA filter vacuum, dusting with microfiber cloths, and washing bedding weekly can significantly reduce allergens and particles.

5. Add Houseplants

While they won't dramatically filter air, plants like spider plants, peace lilies, and snake plants can help remove some toxins and add oxygen to your space.

6. Avoid VOCs

Volatile organic compounds from paints, cleaners, and air fresheners can pollute indoor air. Choose low-VOC products and ensure good ventilation when using chemicals.

7. Install a Whole-Home Air Purifier

These systems integrate with your HVAC to filter all the air in your home, removing particles, allergens, and even some bacteria and viruses.

8. Have Ducts Cleaned

Over time, dust, mold, and debris can accumulate in your ductwork. Professional duct cleaning every 3-5 years can improve air quality and system efficiency.

9. Test for Radon

Radon is a colorless, odorless gas that can seep into homes and cause lung cancer. Test your home and install a mitigation system if levels are elevated.

10. Schedule HVAC Maintenance

A well-maintained HVAC system filters air more effectively and prevents the buildup of mold and bacteria in the system.
